Chennai: In a shocking incident, assailants shot dead a retired Naval officer and his wife and shot at four others, including their two grand children at suburban Panayur on East Coast on Monday evening.
Police said two assailants, who came in a car shot dead the retired officer Ilango and his wife from point blank range after making an abortive attempt to loot jewellery and other valuables from their farm house.
The injured, including a daughter-in-law of the officer and a maid who were admitted to hospital.
After opening fire, the assailants tried to flee from the scene, but one of them, identified as Raja alias Shanmugaraja was nabbed by the police, who rushed to the house on hearing gunshots.
Police Commissioner of Chennai T Rajendran told CNN-IBN that one person has been arrested and further investigations are on.
His accomplice, however, fled the scene, police added. Senior Police officials visited the spot and special teams have been formed to nab the culprit.
