CHIKMAGALUR: The state government will modernise the canals of Bhadra and Kabini reservoirs and supply water to irrigate an additional 22 hectares besides introducing drip irrigation in the district on the lines of Haveri and Gadag, said Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda.Offering bagina to Bhadra reservoir at the dam site near here on Tuesday, he said that all the reservoirs in the state were full and is expected to generate an extra 22 MW of power from the Sharavathi.The district administration has been directed to take up relief works in the drought-hit Kadur taluk and Shivani hobli in Tarikere taluk, he said, adding that district in-charge secretaries and district ministers too must take care of affected areas.Saying that Rs 60.29 crores had been reserved in the budget for irrigation purpose, he claimed that the government had proved its farmer-friendly stand by presenting a separate agriculture budget and extending loans to the farmers at one per cent interest.Noting that the Bhadra Reservoir Project (BRP) area would be beautified on the lines of Brindavan Gardens in Mysore by the Tourism and Horticulture Departments, he observed that the path deviation of the Upper Bhadra Project was on the cards and two meetings had already been held in this regard.Soon after the Koppal bypolls, a substitute arrangement would be made without troubling the farmers of Tarikere, the CM added.
