New Delhi: In a curious turn of fate, Hurriyat Conference hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani could soon be taking help from a leader of the moderate faction for a fresh lease of life.
Geelani, who is currently undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Delhi, has reportedly been diagnosed with renal cancer and a leader of the moderate faction of Hurriyat has come forward to donate one of his kidneys to the ailing leader.
There has not been any confirmation either of the ailment or the kidney donation from the Geelani family as yet.
But PTI quoted Shahidul Islam, a leader of moderate faction of Hurriyat, as saying that he has offered to donate one of his kidneys, as Geelani's presence is critical at this stage.
"The movement is passing through a very crucial stage and Geelani's presence is critical. I request him to accept the kidney donation," he said. One of Geelani's kidneys had been removed earlier during an operation in 2003.
Islam says he is hopeful that Geelani would accept his offer. Islam is the spokesman of the moderate faction headed by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
Islam's move has been appreciated by many as he has come forward with the offer in spite of strong ideological differences with Geelani. In fact, the two factions of Hurriyat have often been at loggerheads and have publicly criticised each other.
The Hurriyat suffered a vertical split in 2003 following differences over the functioning of the amalgam during the 2002 Assembly elections in the state.
