HYDERABAD:  In an effort to provide minimum support price (MSP) to tobacco farmers, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Thursday sanctioned Rs 20 crore to local farmer cooperative societies from market committee funds towards market intervention. Out of this, Rs 10 crore will be released immediately as first installment and the remaining amount will be released later. It may be recalled that a delegation of tobacco farmers along with minister for municipal administration and urban development M Maheedhar Reddy and MP Magunta Srinivas Reddy called on the chief minister and appraised him on their plight. The tobacco farmers urged the chief minister to sanction funds to the farmer cooperative societies and direct them to start procuring tobacco which will force the national and international tobacco companies to purchase tobacco at MSP. The chief minister ordered the officials concerned to examine the proposal and submit their report following which he took the decision to release the Rs 20 crore towards tobacco procurement.
