Cocking a snook at Commissionerate Police, unidentified miscreants fired on two staffers of a dal processing unit and snatched Rs 4.30 lakh from their possession in broad daylight in Jatni on Monday. One of the staffers is receiving treatment for bullet injuries at a private hospital of the City. His condition is stated to be critical.
The incident occurred in an alley, located barely 100 metre from the local police station, at about 1.30 pm. Prakash Sahoo and Kedar Khatei were returning after collecting dues when the miscreants waylaid them. Sahoo is accountant with Manakshya Associates Private Ltd, located in Mancheswar Industrial Estate of the City, while Khatei is the driver.
The duo was in an Indica car in the Electricity Lane of Jatni when four youths, riding two bikes, intercepted them and asked for the cash. When the driver tried to ignore them and move away, the miscreants fired five rounds. Khatei took two bullets __ one on his right thigh and another on left hand. He was rushed to SUM Hospital before being shifted to Vivekananda Hospital, police said. He is currently under observation. The robbers made away with the cash.
Police suspect that the robbers might be trailing the duo for quite some time. The duo follows a regime of collecting dues from various offices and individuals on Mondays and Fridays. They always drove in the same Indica car __ bearing registration number OR 02 BY 2644.
Investigation revealed the two collected dues from Patrapada and Khurda before moving to Jatni where they went to as many as six places for the collection.
“We suspect that the miscreants knew about their movements well in advance but were looking for a vantage point to carry out the robbery. The area, where it occurred, is a quiet locality,” a police officer said.
Commissionerate Police have constituted teams to launch a manhunt for the miscreants who are believed to be outsiders. A case has been lodged with Jatni Police in this regard.
