Sonia Gandhi has announced a compensation of Rs five lakh each to the families of the tribals killed in Jajpur, Orissa.

Orissa: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has announced a compensation of Rs five lakh each to the families of the tribals killed in police firing in Kalinganagar in Orissa's Jajpur district.

Sonia Gandhi is in Orissa to meet the families of the victims. But this is not the only place in the state brimming with tribal resentment.

More than 3,000 tribals in Rourkela are agitating over the rehabilitation package after the construction of the Rourkela steel plant.

On Tuesday tribals set four vehicles on fire and disrupted train services. Many trains passing through the area have been diverted.

Since the construction of Rourkela steel plant five decades back, tribals have been demanding land and jobs as rehabilitation packages.

Tribal leader Rourkela, George Tirkey said, "We are agitating here peacefully. But nobody from the government has come and asked us what we want. If no one comes and meets us, we will have more people join us for strike tomorrow."

Meanwhile the CPI-ML and Lok Sangram Manch called for a bandh today in protest against the Kalinganagar firing issue.
