VELLORE/THIRUVANANMALAI: Rupees five lakh was stolen from a house in Chengam on Saturday and the burglar was arrested within eight hours, from a nearby area.Mottaiyan (62) of Iraiyur near Chengam had received a huge amount as sale proceeds from the sale of a piece of land and he and his family had gone to the registrar’s office to register the land in the buyer’s name.When one of his relatives came home in the evening, he found the door of the house broken open and cash missing.Police questioned Ezhumalai (42) of the same area, who confessed to the crime. He had spent about `5,000 and had hidden the rest in a bush. He was  arrested and the remaining cash was recovered. Tiruvannamalai SP Samundeswari appreciated the cops for apprehending the culprit in a short span of time.100 Sovereigns of Gold, Cash Stolen Hundred sovereigns of gold jewelry and cash of about `1.5 lakh were looted from a financier’s house near Arni in Tiruvannamalai, on Saturday.Chokkian alias Venkatesan (39) of Arni, proprietor of a finance company and tea shop near the old bus stand had gone on a pilgrimage to Samayapuram and Srirangam temples along with his family. They came home on Saturday night, to see the back door of the house broken open and jewelry and cash looted.Burglars had broken the glass window located at the top of the door and gained entry into the house. Arni DSP Sundaramoorthy and Polur DSP Balulullah rushed to the spot. Arni police filed a case and are investigating.2 Held for Stealing Auto Near PernambutTwo persons were held in Vellore for stealing an auto-rickshaw, near Pernambut, on Saturday.Aasirvadham (25) of Erukampatti near Pernambut had parked his auto-rickshaw in front of his house and the vehicle went missing on Saturday morning.Following a complaint, Pernambut police filed a case. Saravanan (23) and Karthi of Pernambut were held during a vehicle check and arrested when they confessed to stealing the auto they were driving.Burglary Attempt atCo-operative Bank A burglary attempt was made at the Agricultural Co-operative Bank near Natrampalli in Vellore on Saturday.The incident came to light when employees came to work on Saturday morning and  noticed a big hole in the back wall of the bank. It was also discovered that the culprits had tried to break open the locker which contained cash and jewellery estimated at `4 crore. Natrampalli police have registered a case.Theft in Two Temples in Separate IncidentsCash, gold, silver and utensils were stolen in two separate temple theft incidents in Vellore and Kaveripakkam on Saturday.The theft at Pachaiamman temple near Shenbakkam came to light on Sunday. The hundial of the temple was broken and cash was looted. A few steel utensils were also found missing. Vellore taluk police filed a case.  At the Angaravalli Sametha Mutheswarar temple near Kaveripakkam, a two-gram gold chain and silver utensils were stolen by a woman who visited the temple. Kaveripakkam police registered a case.
