ROURKELA: After Norway and Japan, it was India’s turn to acknowledge the literary genius of Ramendra Kumar, Assistant General Manager, Public Relations, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). ‘Now or Never’, a poignant tale of a father-son relationship penned by Kumar, has found a place in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum as a supplementary reader for Standard-VII and VIII.An MBA and engineer by profession, Kumar is widely regarded as an exponent of Jagannath cult in Orissa. A children’s writer par excellence, Kumar’s works are already part of academic curriculum in Norway. Another story penned by him was adapted as Kamishibai, the traditional form of story telling in Japan. His works have been translated in Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, Mongolian and Sinhala.Kumar can boast of a rich repertoire of clients. His works have earlier appeared in popular anthologies like ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ series. Apart from being a regular speaker on subjects like heritage writing, Kumar is also the editor of www.bolokids.com, a New York based web site. Kumar also had the honour of presenting a paper titled ‘Here and Now Writing: An Indian Paradigm’ at the 31st IBBY World Congress at Copenhagen, Denmark.
