The CPI-M denounced the Iraqi High Tribunal verdict and demanded intervention by the UPA government to get it rescinded.

New Delhi Terming as "rigged" the death sentence to ousted Iraq President Saddam Hussain, the CPI-M on Sunday denounced the Iraqi High Tribunal verdict and demanded intervention by the UPA government to get it rescinded.

"The Polit Bureau denounces the death sentence to the ousted president of Iraq, Saddam Hussain," the CPI-M Central Committee said in a statement.

"This is nothing but a totally rigged verdict delivered after a farcical trial," it said noting that the defence lawyers representing Saddam Hussain were murdered and the Chief Judge was changed twice in the course of the trial.

"The Polit Bureau demands that the UPA government should categorically condemn this judicial travesty. It must actively intervene to get this sentence rescinded," the statement said.

It said the British and the US governments should realise that if executed, this sentence will be seen only as a "judicial assassination" and they will be held responsible for all the consequences.

CPI-M has also asked all its party units to protest the verdict and called upon democratic minded citizens to raise their voice of protest.

"This is a rigged verdict through a trial which is farce and the CPI-M condemn and oppose this capital punishment," CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat said.

“The Centre should actively intervene diplomatically, politically and through the international forum to nullify the verdict. India can bilaterally convey to the US and the UK against the verdict," he added.

Saddam’s death sentence undemocratic: Forward Bloc

All India Forward Bloc on Sunday described the death sentence awarded to former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein as ''undemocratic'', and said it will organise protests across the country against the verdict to expose the ugly face of American imperialism.

''The death sentence once again reveals the nasty face of American imperialism. The Court verdict is a mockery to the democratic traditions of the international judicature. There was no fair trial and the whole trial process was a farce,'' Forward Bloc General Secretary Debabrata Biswas said in a statement.

He said nobody expected that Saddam would be set free by the judicial setup and administration established by the US in Iraq after illegal aggression.

''Current Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki declaring even before the verdict that Saddam would be hanged exposes the interference of the US-sponsored Iraq administration in the judicial process,'' he said.

Mr Biswas urged the progressive people and movement of the world to raise their voices against the verdict.
