New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission has sought a report from the Maharashtra government on the allegation made by Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, a suspect in the Malegaon blast case, that the police tortured her.
The Commission sent notices to Maharashtra Chief Secretary Johny Joseph and Director General of Police A N Roy and directed them to submit a report within two weeks.
Pragya, 38, was arrested on October 23 for allegedly helping the conspiracy to a plant a bomb in Malegaon on September 29 which exploded and killed five persons. One person died later.
Thakur on Monday told a court that the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of the Maharashtra Police is torturing her. "ATS officials threatened to strip me and hang me upside down if I did not confess about my involvement in the blast. I am mentally disturbed and not able to eat anything," she alleged.
Thakur alleged there was no lady officer present during her interrogation and the officials made her watch an obscene CD.
In what could be considered a setback to the ATS, the court remanded the accused to judicial custody till December 3 and turned down the plea to keep them in police custody under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act.
The ATS had last week booked the accused under the MCOCA that would enable them to get their remand any number of times in a period of 180 days from the date the September 29 offence was registered.
