India's star hockey player Sandeep Singh, who was injured in an freak accident, is now conscious and stable.

Chandigarh: India's star hockey player Sandeep Singh, who was injured after the pistol of an RPF jawan accidentally went off on board the Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, was conscious and stable, doctors at the Post Graduate Institute (PGI) of Medical Sciences in Chandigarh said on Wednesday.

"Sandeep Singh is fine. He is stable and responding well to the treatment," PGI sources said.

The bullet lodged in Singh's pelvis or hip-bone was surgically removed by PGI doctors after the drag-flicker was yesterday rushed there from a hospital in Kurekshetra following the accidental firing incident.

PGI's Medical Superintendent Professor A K Gupta had said on Tuesday that Sandeep had been kept under observation for the next 48 hours after his nearly 3-hour-long surgery to extract the bullet.

Sandeep Singh was shot at accidentally by a Railway Protection Force personnel when the officer's pistol went off accidentally inside the Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express near Kurukshetra in Haryana.
