Mumbai: French President Nicolas Sarkozy paid homage to victims of the 26/11 terror attacks and called upon Pakistani authorities to show their commitment that they were resolute in combating terrorism.

"We should have true international cooperation to combat terrorism. We shall stand by India so that justice is delivered. Mumbai terror attacks are comparable to 9/11 attacks. I count on Pakistan authorities to show that they are resolute in combating terrorism," the French President said at Trident-Oberoi Hotel, one of the sites of 26/11 terror strikes, while taking part in a special memorial service.

"It is not enough to seek to protect ourselves from such attacks. It is unacceptable that India's security be threatened by terror groups. It is unacceptable that Taliban and al-Qaeda have safe havens in tribal areas of Pakistan. India has shown remarkable restraint after Mumbai attacks," he said.

He reiterated his commitment that France would help India in combating terrorism.

"One cannot combat terrorism by using the methods of the terrorists. Why people who are educated actually volunteer to massacre and commit suicide? France is under constant threat from Islamic terrorists. France is determined to eradicate this scourge. Terrorism must be universally outlawed and there must be no safe haven. International cooperation must be implemented to the letter, judicial cooperation must be effective. There will be no limit to operational cooperation between India and France in fighting terrorism," he added.

Sarkozy also honoured Karambir Kang of Taj Hotel and Devendra Bharma of Trident-Oberoi for their efforts in saving lives during 26/11 attacks with "Insignia of Officer of Ordre National Du Merite' for distinguished service.

"Mr Kang you did not hesitate for one second to enrol yousrself to save the guests in your hotel. France wants to thank for and that is why I am going to be award you," the French President said.

"During the Mumbai attacks many French nationals were saved by the staff of THE Taj and Trident hotels. I declare the solidarity of France and India in the fight against terrorism. Our heartfelt tribute to those who contributed at the cost of their lives," he said.

Sarkozy, who along with his wife Carla Bruni arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday morning on the last leg of his four-day India visit, went to the Police Memorial on Marine Drive, dedicated to security men killed in fighting terrorists during the 2008 attacks.

Sarkozy will also address business leaders at a programme jointly organised by

industry bodies CII and FICCI. The programme will be attended by Indian and French business leaders.

The event will be held at Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, another site of the dastardly strike, and will be preceded by signing of an agreement between CII and France's The Movement Des Enterprises De France International for extending trade relations, according to a CII executive.

Sarkozy is scheduled to fly back to France after the one-hour meeting with business leaders, though it was not clear if there will be any definite agreements signed during the meet.
