'Satyamev Jayate' finale: A new start for India
The final show was an amalgamation of many issues that illustrated the common vision of our freedom fighters.

New Delhi: Months prior to the first episode of ‘Satyamev Jayate’, we saw trailers of a possible talk show with actor Aamir Khan as the host. A catchy title song, glimpses of parts of the country and Aamir’s searching eyes had us anticipating for a show about India, and the most vital issues affecting its people. ‘Satyamev Jayate’ was all this and more.

Starting with female foeticide to alcohol abuse, the show carried out surveys for proof, brought courageous people to tell their stories to the world, and investigated the loop holes in the legal system. While many targeted the show, in general it had us hooked to the TV set at 11:00 am every Sunday morning.

The final show was sort of like an amalgamation of many issues. It illustrated the common vision of our freedom fighters: The dream that was India. After decades of getting our independence, the show ignited a question in our minds – are we even close to that dream? Discrimination between religious groups, castes, sexes; corruption in our government bodies; and last but not the least, the lack of education in our country.

One concern we think could have been incorporated in the first season of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is India’s rising uncontrolled population. With limited natural resources, and well, land, family planning is essential on so many accounts.

The popularity of this show grew exponentially from the first telecast onwards. The internet, social networking sites, blogs were ignited with ‘this-week’s-topic’ on ‘Satyamev Jayate’. Here are some impact figures from the official website of ‘Satyamev Jayate’…

‘Satyamev Jayate’ did not just throw light on various issues, but also brought to our notice various people, whether individually or in organisations, who are working towards a change. There were also mediums like SMS, email, banking etc through which viewers could make their contributions. Another thing that got us moving was the letters that Aamir sent to the highest authorities of the country demanding, requesting answers and change. Some of the requests were also realised to completion.

Finally, it is safe to say that initiatives like ‘Satyamev Jayate’, that have the ability to bring about awareness amongst people, and snap them out of a state of passive acceptance, are the need of the hour. We hope the show returns with an even bigger Season 2!
