New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sought a response from the Kerala Government and others on Mullaperiyar dam issue.
Earlier, an application was filed seeking implementation of the apex court's earlier order directing an increase in the water level of the Mullaperiyar Dam to 142 feet.
The Supreme Court Bench of Justices C K Thakker and Altamas Kabir directed the Kerala Government, the Centre, besides Tamil Nadu to file its reply with six weeks on the interlocutory application.
The application was moved by some of the aggrieved Tamil Nadu farmers who also sought posting of CISF personnel at the dam site for surveillance to prevent any untoward incident.
The 100-year-old dam located in Kerala's Idduki district has been the lifeline for the parched agricultural lands of Tamil Nadu's Madurai district.
Though located in Kerala, the dam is managed by the PWD wing of the Tamil Nadu Government under an earlier agreement between the two neighbouring states.
According to the application moved by the farmers under the banner of the Periyar Vaigai Single Crop Cultivating Agriculturist Society, though the apex court had on February 27, 2006, directed the Kerala Government to allow the raising of the water level in the dam to 142 feet from the existing 136 feet, the state chose to circumvent the order by bringing in a special legislation.
