The Supreme Court on Thursday said that no coercive action should be taken against the protesting doctors. It also urged doctors, especially the ones working in remote areas, to return to duty.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra also asked the Union Health Secretary to meet top officials and top police officers of various states to formulate a plan for interim safety of doctors.
After the top court resumed hearing the suo motu plea in a case related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after a break, the bench urged the leaders and stakeholders to not to politicise the matter as it a serious crime.
During the hearing, the apex court reprimanded the state government once again for delay in registering FIR and being lenient with former RG Kar Medical College Principal Sandip Ghosh. It also questioned that who was Ghosh protecting.

“Who was he (Ghosh) in touch with, who was he protecting, why the principal didn’t file an FIR?” the bench remarked.
It has also directed the local court to clear permissions on CBI’s plea for polygraph test of arrested accused Sanjay Roy by Friday.
The court has also directed to re-seal the status reports from CBI and West Bengal government as it does not want the statements to go in public as it is a high-profile and sensitive case.
The top court has posted the matter for the next hearing on September 5.
Earlier today, the top court said that the Kolkata Police’s delay in adding an “unnatural death case” to its records while probing the case was “extremely disturbing”.

It also questioned the time difference between the police’s General Diary entry of recording the crime and securing the crime scene. The court mentioned that it was “very surprising” that the postmortem of the deceased was conducted before the registration of the case as unnatural death.
During the hearing, the CBI submitted its status report in compliance with the Supreme Court’s Tuesday directive and flagged issues with the date and time recorded by the Kolkata Police. The probe agency also informed the top court about the financial irregularities at RG Kar, especially the fact that the CCTVs were rented and not bought.
As doctors’ protests continued in different states on Wednesday, OPD services remained hit. The IT Ministry had asked social media platforms to immediately comply with the Supreme Court order on the removal of the name, photos, and videos of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Meanwhile, the IMA on Thursday decided it will file an interlocutory application to intervene in the Supreme Court’s suo motu case. “IMA will be filing an IA (interlocutory application) before the Honourable Supreme Court in the suo moto intervention case. IMA HQ is preparing the necessary documents to appear before the special task force,” an IMA communication to its officials, including those at its state and local branches, said.

The case pertains to rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. Amid the ongoing protests, some miscreants entered the premises of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during early hours of Thursday and vandalised portions of the medical facility, where the body of the victim was found.
The horrific incident has shaken the country with nationwide protests going on demanding the prompt action in the investigation.
