PHULBANI: With the mercury hovering at around 40 degree Celsius, drinking water scarcity has become acute in Phulbani Municipality and G. Udaygiri NAC areas.Against the daily requirement of 5.12 million litres of drinking water, the municipal area receives only 4.5 million litres from the Pilla Salunki river and nine deep-bore wells. The most affected Jiringpada, Nuasahi, FCI Square, Kachara Sahi, Jagannath Sahi, Phulbani Sahi and parts of Amala Pada are being supplied water through two Government and four private tankers, said assistant engineer of Public Health Department Basanta Prasad Dakua. The tankers have been pressed into service since May 1.To meet the shortage of 0.66 million litres, a project under Urban Infrastructure Development in Small and Medium Towns (UIDSM) with a budgetary provision of ` 7.59 crore had been undertaken by the PHD in 2009-10. It envisaged construction of a water treatment plant of six million litres capacity at the Pilla Salunki river near the Narayani temple and an overhead tank. The project would be grounded by the end of this year, said Dakua.Besides, a proposal for augmentation of water supply in G. Udaygiri NAC has also been submitted to the Government. Approval and release of funds are awaited.Meanwhile, water is being supplied through 250 stand posts, 294 tube wells, nine deep bore wells and 2,012 domestic water connections in Phulbani town. On the other hand, there are 110 stand posts and 114 tube wells in G. Udaygiri NAC area with 445 persons being given water connections.Last fiscal, the civic authorities had decided to set up water coolers at the Court Square, bus stand and market area of the town. Funds were allocated from MLA LAD with ` 2 lakh each for a cooler unit. While two units at the bus stand market were made functional last week, the site at the Court square has been reduced to a parking zone.Executive Officer, Phulbani Municipality, R N Routray said due to non-supply of electricity and water connection the project has been delayed, adding that the unit would soon be made functional.
