HYDERABAD: When schools reopen on Monday, it will be in the era of the Right to Education (RTE). The School Education Department is launching into it with the ambitous aim of enrolling a whopping 1.25 lakh children and shoring up school infrastructure across the state.The initiative has been titled Education Fortnight, the high point of which will be the inauguration of 1,000 new school buildings on a single day by chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, ministers and people’s reps fanning out across the state.In the first week of the programme, teachers and officials will visit households in villages to persuade parents to send their children in the 5-14 age group to school. The second week will focus on school infrastructure. Each day will mark the commencement of a new programme: Right to Education Day, Mid-Day Meal Day, Uniforms and Text-books Day, Girl-Child Education Day, and so on.At the high school and Intermediate level, professors and lecturers from university colleges will conduct career guidance counselling for students. Non-governmental organisations, self-help groups and individuals have been enlisted in this initiative. Data relating to dropouts and their enrolment will be compiled on a daily basis.In addition to the 1,000 school buildings, about 3,569 additional classrooms under the Rajiv Vidya Mission, 75 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya buildings and anganwadi centre buildings are ready for inauguration during this fortnight.It was also decided to lay the foundation stones for construction of other buildings and classrooms. Some 10,366 government high schools will have new compound walls. There will also be repairs made to government junior, degree and polytechnic colleges.Teachers across the state have been told to be on their toes on Monday for the campaign kickoff. They will have to report to their headmasters early Monday morning and 42,000 teachers who received their transfer orders recently have been asked to go to their posts without waiting for further orders from the High Court where a petition filed by the Andhra Pradesh United Teachers Federation will come for hearing on Monday. Education officials said the High Court stay of transfer counselling will be applicable only to those who have not received any orders yet. Others are required to report to duty without fail.
