ANGAMALY:  The students of SCMS School of Engineering College will organise a two-day cultural and technical festival, IGNIZ-2011, on its campus in Karukutty, near here. ISRO Thiruvananthapuram head V P Balagangadharan will inaugurate the mega event  on Friday.SCMS group of educational institutions chairman GPC Nayar will preside over the function, said associate professor P Venu.About 1,500 students of various engineering colleges in the country will take part in a variety of competitions to be held in this connection. The cultural fest would be inaugurated by actor Asif Ali on Saturday.About 20 contests, including bomb diffusion, paper presentation, voice of IGNIZ, radio jockey hunt, short film fest and Mr and Miss IGNIZ will be the highlight. An Auto Show will showcase 50 vintage cars, modified cars and motorbikes. The musical fest will be another attraction in which artists such as Bala Basker, Stephen Devassy and Job Kurien would participate. The main theme of IGNIZ is road safety. The students and faculty members of the college conducted a road show from Kalamassery to Angamaly on Thursday. In the wake of increasing road accidents, especially motorbike accidents, the bike users were sensitised on the use of helmets and other safety measures to reduce mishaps. The road show was organised to spread awareness among the public regarding road safety measures, said assistant professor Sujesh P Lal.The students have already identified two spots  on the stretch from Kalamassery to Angamaly on the NH flyover in Aluva as dangerous.A huge amount was spent on the Aluva flyover which connects Pulinchode Junction to Bypass Junction by NHAI. The flyover failed to serve its purpose as there were no provisions for the vehicles to enter Aluva town without causing a traffic block.Kariyad is another spot where accidental deaths and vehicle accidents are common. The pleas for repairing the NH and introducing other safety measures have fallen on deaf ears. The students and staff of SCMS have decided to take up the issues regarding the roads. The students and teachers gathered on both sides of the road with placards and banners. They distributed pamphlets to the pedestrians and commuters.IGNIZ will conclude on Saturday, said  assistant prof B Manoj Kumar.
