Imphal: Manipuri activist Irom Sharmila Chanu, who has been on a fast for the past six years to oppose the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in the northeastern state, completed six years of her protest on Thursday.
Official reports on Friday said Sharmila had began her fast on November 2, 2000 after an Assam Rifles personnel shot dead 10 persons in a bus depot at Malom near Imphal airport.
Sharmila shifted to New Delhi on October 3 and continued her fast after a local court released her from the jail where she had spent the past five years.
A three-day seminar and discussion was held as a mark of solidarity with Sharmila concluded on Thursday at the centenary hall of Manipur University in Imphal.
Organised by rights groups, including Human Rights Alert, the seminar discussed a UN resolution on the role of women in bringing peace to the world. The book Sharmila: a messenger of peace was released during the seminar.
