BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) took up the case of 24-year-old C R Nalina Reddy, who died during a mock drill by the Fire Department in the city recently. SHRC Chairman Justice S R Nayak referred the case to the Inspector General of Police, SHRC, for inquiry and asked him to submit a report within six weeks.Nayak said certain guidelines needed to be followed to conduct mock drills and it needed to be seen if the officers-in-charge followed them. “An innocent woman coming from a humble background was sacrificed in the so-called mock drill. In view of the incident, it becomes absolutely necessary to conduct an impartial inquiry and fix the accountability on the officers concerned and to pay adequate compensation to the dependents of the victim,” he stated. He also said it was reasonable for the government to pay a compensation of `10 lakh to the victim’s family members. In this regard, the SHRC issued a notice to the Secretary of Home Department to send his response.
