BARIPADA: Blind belief has led to horrible death of a woman in tribal-dominated Mayurbhanj district. A man in Chandua police station area allegedly ‘sacrificed’ his sister purportedly to get ‘mental peace and wealth.’Police arrested Mangal Marandi (38) of Nimainsahi (Sansaraposhi) village, while he was trying to flee to West Bengal. He was remanded in judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected on Saturday.Sources said Mangal chopped off his 35-year-old sister Kajal Marandi’s head while she was asleep.Mangal had a tiff with his mother Danagi Marandi (65) a couple of days ago. Following this, Danagi had left the house, leaving Kajal with him.Officer-in-charge of Chandua police station Jaynarayan Khandei said Mangal has confessed to have killed his sister to attain supernatural powers.Mangal had killed a snake a few days ago. “He claimed he killed his sister as the snake god insisted in his dream to do this to get mental peace and wealth. In the dream, the snake god threatened to kill all members of his family if he didn’t sacrifice one of them,” police said after interrogating Mangal.“We arrested the accused near Kothabila forest while he was attempting to flee. He admitted that he murdered his sister,” police added.Police have seized the weapon used in the crime. A team of scientific officers visited the spot to gather evidence.
