Saharanpur: As the situation improved in the violence-hit Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, curfew was relaxed for four hours in the town to allow people to buy their daily need items from markets which were directed to remain open.
Local residents are hoping for a peaceful Eid. "We just want a curfew free Eid and return of peace," a local resident of Saharanpur said.
The curfew was relaxed from 3 PM to 7 PM in the old town. Earlier in the day, curfew was relaxed in the new city area from 10 AM to 2 PM. The authorities will decide on continuing with the curfew on the basis of the situation.
Uttar Pradesh Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar said, "The situation is under control now. The decision to call off the curfew partially was taken after consulations with all officers. We will review the situation today in both the halves of the city and then make a decision about tomorrow."
The main accused, Moharrum Ali Pappu, who allegedly instigated the violence, has not yet been arrested. Saharanpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandey said, "We have not arrested him yet, but we are hopeful that we will catch hold of him very soon. He was here at the time of incident, trying to instigate people."
