Agartala: Tripura government has decided to revoke the controversial Armed forces special powers act, AFSPA, in the state. Sources within the Central government said they have no objection to AFSPA being lifted and that there are no plans to challenge the move.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said the situation in the state has improved and there is no need of AFSPA. "We have seen that the situation in the state has improved. This disturbed area was declared in 1997. Every six months we have been reviewing the situation."
"we have not consulted the central government. Earlier the state government had taken this decision on its own so now also the state government will take the decision to remove it," he added.
Reacting to this, CPI leader D Raja said, "Similar demand is there in Jammu and Kashmir to repeal the AFSPA. And in Tripura AFSPA was misused against the Human Rights act."
The law was in effect for the last 18 years to curb insurgency in Tripura. This Act was imposed in the state on February 16, 1997 following spurt of violence by the ultras.
