THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The law bans smoking in public places. But try stopping smokers. Or just ask Vidushi Chaturvedi, a female tourist from New Delhi, who tried to enforce the law. Vidushi has now lodged a complaint with the Kovalam police against three foreigners identifiable by sight who reportedly harassed her after she demanded they stop smoking. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at a restaurant at Kovalam Beach where Vidushi was having snacks with her six-year-old child and her friends. Problems erupted when three foreigners at a nearby table started smoking. Vidushi objected, but they continued undeterred. In fact, not only did they not stop smoking, they also made fun of her and behaved indecently, she says. Vidushi says the three men had the physical characteristics of Eastern Europeans and were in their forties and fifties. Although she complained to the manager of the restaurant, he was quite unresponsive. An enraged Vidushi called the police from her mobile. They arrived after an hour! By then, the men had left the restaurant and the police could not find them. Vidushi also complains that the police, in fact, spoke to the restaurant manager first rather than her, the complainant. The police have filed her complaint. When City Express contacted the Kovalam police, they said that an investigation was on. Nabbing the men would be a tough job since they have not been identified yet, they said. ‘’We are checking the hotels in Kovalam. But they might not be staying at Kovalam at all,’’ the Kovalam SI said. Vidushi says she will be able to identify the men anywhere. But she has also taken another decision. She does not wish to see Kovalam again. Vidushi left for New Delhi on Wednesday morning.
