Sports Day held at Valliammal

CHENNAI: Valliammal College for Women, located at Anna Nagar, celebrated its 24th Annual sports day recently. S Vijayalakshmi, an Arjuna Awardee and the first Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in Chess from India, was the Chief Guest of the day. She emphasised on the importance of sports and games for an overall development of a student. She appreciated the college for showing equal importance to sports and other traditional self-defence activities like silambattam. She said that getting trained in these traditional art forms would inculcate discipline and improve a student’s performance. She urged the students to take active part in all athletic and sports events. The day began with a spectacular march past led by the musical tones of the college band. The day’s highlight was the Yoga demonstration, Karate and Silambattam performances that drew a huge applause from the audience.Ramesh, Co-ordinator,  Chennai Police, Community Projects, graced the occasion as the guest of honour. The Principal, T V S Padmaja, delivered the welcome address. The Chief Guest, S Vijayalakshmi, gave away the prizes to the winners. The Chairman, A P Maikandan and S Valavan also graced the occasion.
