CHENNAI: A day after the DMK announced the acceptance of his resignation from the post of party deputy general secretary and nominated another Dalit functionary for that position, Parithi Ellamvazhuthi on Friday decided to wash dirty intra-party linen in public. He, however, said he would continue as the DMK executive committee member, elected as he was to the post from the party’s North Chennai unit. The rebellion of Ellamvazhuthi — who rose to the top echelons of the party from being a functionary of the youth wing during the past three decades — has definitely put a question mark over claims that DMK treasurer M K Stalin was the most acceptable heir to the party throne among DMK functionaries.Addressing a press conference here surrounded by his supports, including a couple of councillors, Ellamvazhuthi said he was denied an opportunity to meet DMK president M Karunanidhi. Besides, Stalin avoided meeting him on four occasions. While conveying his ‘best wishes’ to former deputy speaker V P Duraisamy who has named the new deputy general secretary of the party and A Krishnasamy, who has been made joint secretary of the party’s Adi Dravida Welfare Committee, Ellamvazhuthi said: “I am sure party president Karunanidhi would not have taken this decision wholeheartedly. This decision has been taken overriding Karunanidhi.”Answering a number of questions about Stalin’s involvement in the row, Ellamvazhuthi indicated that Stalin was in fact acting against the wishes of Karunanidhi.Asked whether his reason for resigning — absence of inner party democracy still holds good, he said: “I don’t want to mumble by saying that intra-party democracy exists in the DMK.”Referring to the re-admission of some functionaries into the DMK fold who had worked against him the Assembly polls, without consulting him, “This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are lots of such instances across the State at various levels in the party.” Ellamvazhuthi said he was ready to lead disgruntled functionaries.
