CHENNAI: The State-owned Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation Limited (TANCEM) is exploring possibilities of importing cement to control the prices in the open market, Minister for Industries S P Velumani informed the House on Wednesday.In his reply to the discussion on the demand for grant to industries, Velumani said TANCEM would take steps to import five lakh tonne of cement and sell them at an affordable cost. It has also been decided to increase the capacity of Alankulam unit from two lakh tonne to four lakh tonne per annum. Similarly, a 10-lakh tonne capacity will be added to the Ariyalur unit.To give cement at an affordable price to contractors of PWD, highways and slum clearance board, TANCEM is coordinating with private suppliers to supply it `235 a bag. To control price, cement is sold through TN Civil Supplies Corporation Limited to the poor and middle-class.
