Stop water release to TN: Panel

The Cauvery River Protection Committee that strongly opposed the Supreme Court directions to release water to Tamil Nadu, wants the state government to withdraw its affidavit assuring 10,000 cusecs per day.

The committee meeting presided over by former MP G Made Gowda criticised the state government for betraying the interest of farmers.

In a resolution passed at the meeting, the committee urged the state government not to accept any conditions imposed during the Cauvery River Authority meeting called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at New Delhi on September 19.

The committee has decided to go on an indefinite strike at Silver Jubilee Park in Mandya to pressure the Union government.

It also wants Union Ministers from the state, MPs and MLAs to apprise the Prime Minister and the Centre of the prevailing drought situation and storage in all reservoirs.

The meeting was attended by MP N Chaluvaraya Swamy, KRRS, president K S Puttanniah, leader Sunanda Jairam , legislators C S Puttaraju, M Srinivas , Ramakrishna and others.

They also staged a protest by blocking roads for some time.

 15 Held in Ch’nagar

Fifteen Kannada activists were arrested in Chamrajanagar when they protested the release of water to Tamil Nadu.

Kannada Kavalu Pade activists blocked the busy Yalandur-Chamarajnagar highway near Santhemarahalli.

Kannada activist Tayur Vittalmurthy urged the government to file a review petition against the SC direction.

Terming the decision unscientific, he said that TN wants to store water in Mettur reservoir at the cost of the state farmers.
