New Delhi: After days of standoff with the UGC over the four-year undergraduate programme, most colleges in Delhi university have agreed to end the controversial four-year post graduate programme course. However, confusion persists with no official word from the authorities on when the admission process is due to start.
While 57 out of 64 colleges have sent their replies to the University Grants Commission (UGC) informing that they will complying with the directives, no dates have been announced for the admission process to begin.
Confusion reigns over Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh's resignation too. Accortding to reports on Tuesday, the VC had tendered his resignation from the post. However, the HRD Ministry clarified that it had not received Singh's resignation.
Legal adviser to Dinesh Singh, Suraj Singh, too, said that the VC has not resigned. "I'm going to advise Dinesh Singh that autonomy of the Delhi University is to be preserved and the UGC directive is illegal. He has not resigned yet," Suraj Singh said.
HRD minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday had summoned Pro Vice Chancellor of the Delhi University to hold talks about the future. HRD Ministry sources said that the process of selecting the new Vice Chancellor will begin soon. Sources added that the record of Dinesh Singh in managing finances of the university can be scrutinised too despite the Delhi University being an autonomous body.
Sources said Dinesh Singh didn't follow the due procedure in implementing the FYUP program. Sources added that the Vice Chancellor did not amend rules before initiating the four-year course and in the eyes of the HRD Ministry, the FYUP scheme was illegal.
The UGC and the VC had been engaged in a stand-off with the UGC directing Sharma to scrap the 4-year programme and revert to the 3-year undergraduate course but Singh refused to comply with the UGC deadline. UGC had also asked DU to immediately instruct colleges to admit students under 3-year programme.
