The students went berserk soon and damaged everything that came their way.   The students broke the front glass of a police van and college principal’s car parked near the campus. “The college notice board was destroyed and the flower pots were overturned. Even many doors and windows of the classrooms were broken,” a lecturer said. The situation was brought under control after armed police were deployed on the campus.Later, the agitating students gathered in front of the college gate to protest against the partisan attitude of the authorities towards the students’ union polls.  Soon after the clash, the police took 12 student leaders into custody.  Later, they were released on bail.  The college authorities had published an election notification on the notice board a few days ago asking students to finish off all the election procedures within in a day.According to principal Jenson P O, 16 days were lost owing to the students strike and it was not possible to devote more time for the election. “We are following the semester system. So we don’t have time to waste,” he said. An urgent PTA and general body meeting was convened in the wake of the incidents.“The college authorities are trying to hold the students’ union poll in an autocratic way here without giving enough time for students to prepare for the election,” alleged Vyshakan, SFI district secretary.According to the directive of college authorities, the filing of nomination, its scrutiny and rejection and the poll process would be held in a single day.
