KOCHI: Fighting off the scorching sun and joining in the spirit of the athletic meet at the Maharaja’s College ground on Thursday were the cadets of the Students Kerala Police.Vibrant and duty-bound, they have come out together to make the state-level athletic meet a success.“This is the first time in the district that the students police have been appointed to help assist a sports meet,” said ASI Alexander Stanley. He added that though earlier they were selected as volunteers for district youth festivals and Independence Day parades, it is the first time they have assisted a sports event. “This is a new exposure and experience for them,” he said. And, for most students who have been given an opportunity, it is a blessing in disguise. Said Akshay Rajan, a 14-year-old student police from St George, Kothamanglam: “I have won medals in the district-level junior boys relay. I am happy that I got a chance to interact with state-level athletes. I have always wanted to participate in the state-level games and wish to be selected for the same next year."According to the authorities, the students of Kerala Police were recommended as volunteers for the event by the Sports Council. The Kerala Police had deputed its students in a previous athletic meet held in Kozhikode. Seeing the success, the Sports Council felt that there was a need to recommend such students to help make the game successful.Young, disciplined and full of energy, the students feel that guiding the athletes throughout the competition, cleaning the ground and assisting the athletes are all part of the job.“We are expected to stand in the heat and do our work, but we have no complaints,” said Gayatri, a ACS school student, who was standing for gate duty at the ground. Also, running around to supply water, carrying desks and equipment are their responsibilities. Students from Ayappankavu School, Govt Girls High School, SNHS Thrikkakara, St Joseph Punithura, Sree Venketeshwara and St Sebastian, were selected for the task.
