Chennai: After a hot and humid afternoon, the skies opened up to provide some relief to residents of the city on Sunday evening. Intermittent spells of rain were witnessed at various parts over the past week. The rains that started around 4.30 pm continued late into the night. Evening plans were cancelled, as families preferred to stay indoors rather than brave the waterlogged roads and heavy traffic that usually accompanied the rain.
Natasha S, whose family normally went out on Sunday nights, said, “As long as we are in the car, it is fine. The problems begin when we have to step out.” After just a few minutes of rain, puddles of water formed, disrupting traffic and hindering pedestrians from walking on the roads, she said. Anna Salai, Teynampet and Nandanam Junctions witnessed minor traffic snarls.
Places like Nungambakkam High Road had slow moving traffic for more than an hour. The city malls too were crowded as many preferred to stay someplace dry and safe, as opposed to going to the beach. Met officials said that rains would occur in the evenings over the next few days even if the daytime temperatures were high.
