CHENNAI: It was super Sunday indeed for volunteers of Anna Hazare’s India Against Corruption. They celebrated the government’s concessions to Hazare on a strong Lokpal Bill all day long at various events across the city. They organised group viewing of TV broadcasts showing Hazare ending his fast at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, and later held a rally at the Marina Beach.Despite the fact that celebrations had broken out at the venue of the IAC demonstrations at Thiruvanmiyur and other locations, a group of around 60 people gathered in the morning to watch the telecast streamed online on a laptop computer.As speakers urged the crowds gathered in Delhi to chant the slogans that have marked the demonstrations, and took an oath not to offer or accept bribes, the volunteers gathered in Chennai joined the chorus on TV.Leaving the venue, an unfinished construction site, in high spirits, the volunteers prepared for a huge celebratory rally on the Marina Beach in the evening.Over 2,000 people raised slogans and marched waving the National Flag. They repeated the slogans they had raised over the past 12 days. “This is not the end of our struggle. We will keep watching the government and we will repeat this struggle if the need arises,” said a volunteer addressing the rally, that had assembled on the sands of the Marina.The volunteers expressed their gratitude to all those who had helped organise the protests and helped in making it a success, including the city’s police force for its understanding and cooperation during the demonstrations.As usual, the gathering dispersed peacefully after singing the National Anthem. Only this time, they were beaming and congratulating each other.
