London: Switzerland's Steve Guerdat rode the only faultless competition to take gold in the men's individual show jumping on Wednesday, as the silver medal was decided by a tense jump-off.
Of the six riders who went clear in the first round, only Guerdat produced the same result under pressure in the second, with British home favorites Scott Brash and Nick Skelton both hitting a fence.
The jump-off was between Gerco Schroder of the Netherlands and Ireland's Cian O'Connor, both of whom avoided hitting any fences but each picked up a time penalty, in O'Connor's case for being just 0.02 seconds late.
Schroder's jump-off round was faultless, and O'Connor knocked down the last fence to hand the Dutchman silver.
O'Connor's bronze gives Ireland its first medal of the Olympics, with boxer Katie Taylor certain of adding another in her lightweight final on Thursday.
