With the monsoon fast approaching, residents of T Nagar and Medavakkam are a worried lot. A host of key civic issues that are yet to be addressed include poor conditions of roads, lack of safety and security due to inadequate lighting and garbage dumping on the streets.

In view of a few meetings organised by the Civic Exnora in both the areas, ‘water-logging’ emerged as  a common issue, especially in Padmanabha and Sivasailam streets in T Nagar.

“Storm water drains are completely clogged in both the streets due to improper water connections; water logging is a perennial problem. Officials must make note of these conditions,” said R Govindraj, president, Chennai District, Civic Exnora

The residents during the meeting added that garbage strewn on the streets is a major concern. They observed that debris from adjacent streets are dumped in Sivasailam and Padmanabha Streets and  that garbage clearance in the area is irregular. They added that it led to health hazards in the area.

The meet also called for the renovation of  Sharma Park on Habibullah Road and brought to light the problems faced by the walkers that include illegal and immoral activities such as drug abuse inside the park, along with insufficient lighting, poor maintenance, encroachments, water logging and lack of greenery.

“The park was earlier a playground, after repeated efforts it was turned into a park with some greenery. But the concern now is that it is being used for a lot of activities such as drug abuse and drinking alcohol,” said Govindraj.

Govindraj explained that even after installing lights in and around the park, some miscreants end up breaking them.

In Medavakkam, proposals were made to preserve the Medavakkam Lake that runs along Vadukkupattu main road.

A significant point which dominated both the meetings at Medavakkam and T Nagar was the safety and security of residents due to inadequate street lights.

With the lake on one side of the road in Medawakkam, residents felt it was difficult to undertake walks after 7 pm. It was also found that the same stretch was being used as public toilets.

A request was also put forth to the police authorities to open a police outpost that will serve as a deterrent to criminal activities in Medavakkam, as the nearest police station is Pallikaranai.
