HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate Dandamudi Venkata Samrajyam won the 117-KPHB Colony of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) ward elections. She defeated her nearest rival Harish Chandra Reddy Pannala (Congress) by a margin of 2,167 votes. D V Samrajyam polled 13,032 while HCR Pannala secured 10,865 out of the total valid votes of 24,818.Among the other candidates in the fray, Banda Visweswara Rao of the BJP polled only 404 votes, Chandranand J 46 and Kakkerla Madhu Goud secured 114 votes. Mild tension prevailed at the counting centre when Pannala, along with his supporters, thrashed TDP corporator Rama Rao, some local TDP leaders and party workers.They also damaged a few vehicles belonging to the TDP leaders. Sensing that the situation was spiralling out of control, police whipped out their lathis and dispersed the mob.They arrested Pannala and his supporters and booked cases against them.However, the TDP leader and his supporters were later released on bail.TDP floor leader in GHMC Singireddy Srinivas Reddy hailed the victory of Samrajyam. “People voted for the TDP as it has always worked for the welfare of the people and always stood by them,” he said. GHMC officials said the total polling percentage was around 35.39 percent. Six rounds of counting took place. Of the total 70,187 voters, about 24,818 voters exercised their franchise.As many as 11 candidates were in the fray. The seat fell vacant due to the sudden demise of sitting TDP corporator Dandamudi Shobhanadri. Winner of the bypoll Samrajyam is the widow of the former corporator.
