CHENNAI: S Dhairyalakshmi, a 19-year-old civil engineering student of Anna University, on Tuesday hanged herself in her hostel room, depressed over poor academic performance. On Tuesday, while attending classes, she shared her apprehension with another classmate. “She told her friend that she was not able to cope with studies,” Investigating Officer K Ramesh told Express. During the break at 10.10 am, her friend went to the washroom while Dhairyalakshmi went to her hostel room and was not seen in class 20 minutes later. At 11.15 am, her roommate Gomathi, came to the hostel and found the door locked inside. When repeated knocks turned futile, she raised an alarm. On gaining entry into from the rear end, the warden and other students found that she had hanged herself with a dupatta. Police, who arrived on the scene, sent the body to the KMCH. “We also recovered a suicide note,” Ramesh said. In her note written in Tamil, Dhairyalakshmi said that she had failed in several subjects. “I am going to fail in my second semester exam also and if I cannot study well, I am a waste to my family,” the note read. Acknowledging that her teachers taught well, she said it was she who was not able to cope with her studies. “So I am leaving. I am responsible for my decision. Please don’t mistake me,” the note said. Police said her father Sakthivel, a farmer, was informed.
