Burra Ravinder Reddy, a farmer hailing from the Kalikota village, Telangana is in the news after he revealed the dwindling profits from the chillie produce. In an interaction with Local18 Telangana, Reddy said that he has been cultivating dry chillies on his four acres of land for the past few years. He added that the chillies of a specific category are being sold to customers from Rs 120-180 per kilogram.
Reddy, however, is not satisfied with this selling rate and said that this product was being sold for Rs 250 and 220 less than ten days ago in the last week. Currently, however, the price of a kilo of dry chillies has trickled down thereby leading to a decrease in the amount of profits for the Kalikota farmer.
Reddy expressed concern over the fact that people should care about the welfare of the farmers and take an interest in buying the good quality crops grown by the farmers themselves. He advised the consumers to refrain from purchasing vegetables and fruits from the middlemen. This will ensure that the farmers will be able to receive a lot of benefits, thus eliminating the role of middlemen. Buying quality crops from the farmers, according to Reddy, will be beneficial for the customers as well from the point of view of their money spent and health. According to the Kalikota native, the crops purchased from the middlemen will be of poor quality and high prices.
Reddy expressed anguish at the fact that the middlemen want farmers should provide the best quality food products in huge quantities at the lowest prices. It is therefore left to the consumers to ensure that the farmers will be able to secure their due rights.
Reddy said that currently, the dry chillies are being sold near the police station at the Vemulawada, Telangana. He assured the customers of receiving the best quality chillies at this location.
