Though the documentation of the riches of the Sree Padmanabha Temple has commenced, the temple security wing is yet to get modern gadgets and more manpower.
The second phase of updation of the security wing, a much expected one for the past few months, has not even begun and it is not yet clear when it would start. Though the Government had allotted Rs 10 crore last May to tighten the security, so far not much has been done in this direction.
“The second phase is yet to start. We are working with almost the very same manpower and equipment which we had when the wing formed,” sources said.
In the second phase, the four doors of the temple compound and walls would be strengthened. The number of the police personnel might also be increased from the present 233. But the snail’s pace of the updation process makes the temple security wing pessimistic and they are anxious over how to make the security tight as the temple riches are attracting more and more attention each day.
With the allotment of ` 10 crore, though it was planned to import digital scanners and x-ray machines from abroad as a part of the second phase of security arrangements, it also has not materialised yet.
Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and Keltron have been assigned with the task of buying the new equipment. “At present, we have 56 CCTV cameras and door frame metal detectors. We hope to be better-equipped during the second phase of updation,” said N Vijayakumar, Deputy Commissioner, temple security wing.
