New Delhi: The recent terror attack in the heart of India's IT capital may have left the authorities looking for ways to counter such strikes but the IT industry claims that it is safe.

If terrorists were to strike an IT company, the people working there would be at risk and not the information they are working with, because these companies are trained to deal with such exigencies.

It has been the practice of the industry to keep in mind the terror threats and they have disaster recovery plans in place.

They are on guard against natural and man-made calamities, and have multiple back ups for data, called disaster recovery centres, because an organisation could be paralysed if vital information were lost.

Also most IT companies have taken to Dual Wiring, which means that each desk has more than one network connection.

So if operations at a particular centre get hit, they can automatically be managed out of other centres.

"We have very sophisticated business continuity systems," President of Genpact Pramod Bhasin said.

But a software industry is mainly about people and while people are resilient and can bounce back from an attack, they might react differently if they constantly feel vulnerable.

Perhaps the attack on Bangalore, a symbol of India's knowledge economy is to create this sense of vulnerability.

"From the point of view of what business looks at, they would really look at how we can get this down to minimum and importantly if there is any incident manmade or natural does business go an as usual," Nasscom President Kiran Karnik says.

So it is not the attack itself, as the speed and determination with which the Karnataka government apprehends those responsible, bring them to justice and puts measures in place to prevent a recurrence, that will determine Bangalore's attraction as a software destination.

Of course Bangalore has much going for it but and a little bit of vigilance will help the city retain its tanquility.

What's your reaction?
