A meeting of the textile mills’ trade unions here had decided to stage a dharna in front of Parliament in New Delhi on September 5, demanding a grant of Rs 500 crore to renovate the Anglo-French Textile (AFT) mills, Swadeshi Cotton Mills and Bharathi Textile Mills.
The meeting, chaired by the AITUC leader, V S Abhishegam, adopted a resolution in this regard at the meeting. It was also decided to seek an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on September 6 for submitting a memorandum on the demand.
Abhishegam said that the UT government should prepare a detailed report after studying the various aspects regarding modernisation of the mills and should send it for the Central government’s consideration.
The AITUC leader pointed out that the mills, the oldest in the country, fell on bad days following mismanagement. He said the Central government, in spite of receiving revenue from the mills, did not spend enough for their upkeep.
The cyclone Thane in December last year devastated the mills, especially the AFT, destroying the infrastructure. Efforts are yet to be made even to repair the damage caused by the cyclone, Abhishegam added.
Abhishegam recalled that the products from these mills were in great demand in various parts of the country as well as in international markets.
The trade union leader said that the modernization and proper management of the mills is of utmost necessity and would further increase the job opportunities for the youth.
Abhishegam added that about 50 members of various trade unions would participate in the dharna. The meeting, which was held on Friday, was attended by representatives from LPF, INTUC, UTUC, PMK and NTU.
