CHENNAI: Notwithstanding the State government’s stance, the first day of Thai would be the new year for the Tamils and Dravidians, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi said here on Wednesday.Writing for the party organ Murasoli, Karunanidhi traced a long history of how many renowned Tamil scholars had stood for Thai as the new year. “CM Jayalalithaa was angered by the rejection of the State government’s plea in the SC on the Samacheer Kalvi issue and the TN Tamil New Year (Declaration) Act, 2008 was repealed,” he charged.Whatever might be the State’s position, for those who were born as Tamilians and for all those who proudly identified themselves with the Dravidian race, Thai shall be the new year, he said. “It shall be a day of great rejoicing and awakening.”
