Many destitute people in Kochi might just be benefitted with Murugan S of Theruvora, a social worker based at Kochi being in their lives. Abounding in experience and much to tell the world about the heart rending struggles he faced while being a good Samaritan , Murugan is all set to publish his three books.
He has finished writing books titled ‘ Theruvil ninnu theruvileku’, ‘Kuttikalum, Niyamavum, samrakshnavum’ and ‘Mother’, the last being a book written in English.
Murugan says that since his life started from the streets, his first book ‘Theruvil ninnu theruvilekku’ also deals with the life on the streets. “Once, it was just streets I knew about and witnessed many things there. Hence, I thought of writing about it and also about lives which were saved from the streets. Thus was born the first book,” he says.
When you go through his experiential books you can never guess that it written by someone who barely managed to pass his fourth standard.
Ask him how he managed to write three books, and he says that it was possible because it came from the heart. “My experiences were too real, honest and sometimes brutal. I never felt once that I would not be able to complete the books,” he says.
But he does not forget to add that the writing process had its challenges and it took him five years to complete his first book.
Murugan says that his second book ‘Kuttikalum, niyamavum and samrakshanavum’ has a special purpose. “Abandoning children has become common these days. But when somebody finds such a child on the street, one does not know whom to contact. This book will provide information on such basic things. Besides, it will also talk about the laws which guarantee safety and protection to a child,” he says. The Malayalam version of his third book ‘Mother’ has been translated into English by his friend, Indu.
In course of his writing, the most thrilling experience he had was when he requested social activist and writer Arundhati Roy to write the preface for his book to which the writer did responded. “She sent me a message personally that she was tied with too much work. I am so happy that she responded. Now I would like to contact Dayabai, another acclaimed social activist,” he says.
Murugan also states that his tryst with publishers was not a happy one. “One of the leading publishers approached me and promised to publish my books provided I adhere to some of their conditions which I rejected completely. They wanted me to highlight sensational issues and wanted somebody else to write for me,” he says.
Murugan plans to take the books to schools and colleges. “I will place a box alongside the books. There is a price tag on the books of course, but buyers can contribute to the box as their conscience permits,” he says with a smile. He also wishes to conduct seminars at educational institutions on these burning issues.
