Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan wed each other today (June 3) 37 years ago. It was unplanned and secretive, because Amitabh’s popularity was growing and the couple was worried they will have many gatecrashers.
As Jaya Bachchan recalled during one of her TV interviews recently, “We with a group of friends decided to go for a holiday to celebrate Zanjeer’s success. But Amitji’s parents didn’t give permission to go with a girl without being married to her."
So, the next step was to fix a wedding date. Amitabh spoke to Jaya’s parents and once they agreed, they decided to have a private ceremony at a friend’s place in Malabar Hills. Abiding by Jaya’s parents’ wishes, the wedding was conducted in the Bengali way.
It is said that Jaya was attracted to Amitabh even during their FTII days but they fell in love during the making of their first film together, Ek Nazar, which was released in 1972.
