BANGALORE: Two labourers and the owner of a dyeing unit died after inhaling poisonous gas while cleaning a well in Bangalore on Tuesday. The incident was reported from Cubbonpet 2nd Cross in Ulsoorgate police station limits on Tuesday. Two of the victims have been identified as Gangaraju (38), the owner of Raju Dyeing Works, a resident of Vijayanagar, and Chandru, a native of Andhra Pradesh. The other victim is yet to be identified.According to police, the well had dried up and Gangaraju had asked some labourers to clean it.Around 12 noon, Chandru tied a rope around his waist and got into the well, while the other two workers waited outside. As he did not respond for long, another labourer descended into the well to check but he too did not return.Growing suspicious, the other labourer informed Gangaraju, who, without suspecting danger, got into the well but he too did not return, police officials said. The Fire Department, which was informed, rushed to the spot within minutes. They first tried to send down a breathing apparatus but when there was no response, L Bhanuprakash, a fireman, went into the well and came back and confirmed all the three were dead.Chief Fire Officer Ramesh said the well was about the 3540 feet deep and its diameter was less than three feet. "The bodies were lying one above the other and the leg of the labourer, who went in first, was stuck in the slush. "It was a difficult operation as there was no oxygen supply and the well was narrow," he informed.
