ROURKELA: Five final year students of the prestigious National Institute of Technology-Rourkela (NIT-R) were arrested and released on bail after they went berserk, assaulted a police ASI and set afire his motorcycle in an inebriated condition on Sunday night.ASI Keshav Behera of Sector-15 police station who suffered a fracture has been admitted to the Ispat General Hospital (IGH).Police identified the students as Ankur Meena, Bibek Mishra, Ankit Singh, Sudhanshu Sudhakar Julip and Dipanshu Singh, all of 22 years but from various streams. They had partied in the night at Pantha Nivas on Sunday. Police said around 11.30 pm, they came out heavily drunk and indiscriminately assaulted commuters in front of Pantha Nivas. The ASI who was passing through the area was also assaulted and his motorcycle set afire. He then reached the nearby Traffic Post and called up Sector-7 police who rushed to the spot and nabbed them. Cases under various sections have been registered on the complaint of the ASI of Sector-7 police station Nabaghana Patal Singh.The students were incoherent in their statements and insisted that the ASI suffered injury after falling from the bike. The students were allowed bail on Monday noon following intervention of the NIT-R authorities in the wake of their examination from April 26.Rourkela SP Himanshu Lal said further investigation is on. NIT-R Director S K Sarangi, who visited the injured ASI, regretted the incident. He added that the institute would take necessary disciplinary action against them.
