CHENNAI: Responding positively to the plea of legislators, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced a hike in the salary of MLAs, ministers, Speaker and Deputy Speaker besides others.On the concluding day of the session in the House, Jayalalithaa said the constituency allowance of MLAs will be increased from `5000 to `10,000 a month. Legislators would now take a total pay of `55,000 instead of the existing `50,000. Similarly, `5000 was hiked for ministers, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Leader of the Opposition and government Chief Whip. Now the salary of ministers and speaker would be `32,000 from the present `27,000.As regards the Deputy Speaker, Leader of the Opposition and government Chief Whip, the pay would go up to `31,500 from `26,500. This would mean an additional expenditure of `1.41 crore to the government. Stating that representations were received from the Welfare Association of ex-MLAs and MLCs that their pension should be revised, the CM announced a hike of `2000, taking their monthly pension from `10,000 to `12,000— an additional expense of `2.40 crore. Also, the family pension to the heirs of MLAs and MLCs would be hiked from `5,000 to `6,000— an expense of `47.76 lakh, she said. The revision would be effective September 1.
