ERODE: Seven persons were washed away in the Cauvery river near the Vandipalayam TNEB barrage, following sudden release of water from the barrage. The victims were identified as David Basho (48), his wife Giladia Basho (38), daughter Kandin Basho (10) and Charles Smith (45), his daughters Nikki (21) and Dona (19), and their close friend Clastic Bain (26) of Mulapalayam. Both the families were residing at Sasthri Nagar, Mulapalayam, near Erode. Of the seven, only the body of Kandin Basho was recovered and the fate of the others was not known till 7 pm, though servicemen started searches to trace them.Significantly, in David Basho’s family, his son Rayan Basho (2) and in Charles Smith’s family, his wife Debaran Smith (39) escaped unhurt. While the child was rescued by some persons, the woman did not go to the small island like place inside the river where the tragedy occurred. It is said the two Anglo-Indian families went on a picnic to the river near barrage, which was opened on November 29, 2011. They visited the river from the side of Vandipalayam. As there was not much waterflow in the river, they walked on the riverbed and reached a small surface in the middle of the river, where they took photos and were enjoying the pleasant atmosphere. But all of a sudden, water was released from the barrage and all of them were washed away in the flash flood, police sources said.
