New Delhi: The driver of the truck that collided with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's car on Saturday night in Nadia district in West Bengal was arrested on Sunday.

The driver of the Berhampore-bound truck, who escaped after the accident at Nakashipara in which Mukherjee was injured, was arrested in Nadia district, said Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Raj Kanojia.

He is being interrogated by the officials to ascertain how the accident took place.

According to preliminary reports, the truck skidded after one of its tyres deflated and collided with the car in which Mukherjee and senior state Congress leaders were travelling to Kolkata from Murshidabad.

The Minister was brought to New Delhi and admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, doctors at the Army Hospital issued a medical bulletin declaring a CT scan was conducted on the 72-year-old politician to understand the extent of his injuries and that he was in a stable condition.

Mukherjee – who was administered first aid, given 12 stitches and was treated for other injuries at a hospital in Nakashipara in Bengal – was flown to Delhi in a special flight.

However, the condition of his driver and security guard is reported to be serious. Two Congressmen accompanying Mukherjee were also injured in the accident.

Murshidabad DIG Debasis Ray ruled out any foul play in the accident, saying prima facie it looked just a road accident.
