Turkey steps up efforts to check bird flu
Turkey's efforts come in the wake of UN's warning that the virus is fast spreading in the country and poses a threat to neighbours.

Turkey: All hands are on deck to avoid an outbreak of Bird Flu in and around the Turkish Region. Turkey and its neighbouring countries are stepping up efforts to halt an outbreak of the deadly virus.

This follows the UN's warning that the virus is fast penetrating Turkey and now poses a serious threat to neighbouring countries.

The spread of bird flu in Turkey is the worst since the one in Hong Kong in 1997, when 18 people got infected and six died before it could be controlled.

Syria is keeping a strict vigil on the entry of people and poultry at all its check points on the Turkish border and Bulgarian authorities are disinfecting trucks arriving from Turkey.

Bulgaria has also kept vets and border officials on high alert and local inspectors are checking every piece of baggage that's entering the country.

Greece has gone a step further and banned all animal produce coming in from Turkey and is spraying vehicles entering from the Turkish border.

Greek islanders and tourists returning from Turkey are being disinfected before they enter customs control.

Airport authorities are confiscating and destroying any animal produce that's being brought in by passengers - even snacks and sandwiches.
